Superintendent Message Vol. 2 Issue 4 - May 2019

Posted Date: 05/24/2019

There is nothing quite like wrapping up the school year - final exams, end of year programs, award banquets, graduation, and summer!!! As you reflect back on the year spent with Blanco ISD, I hope you recognize the academic gains that have been made, the life lessons that have been learned, and the progress our students have made toward achieving their educational goals.

In the whirlwind of activity, I want to take a moment to “Celebrate What Is Right!” I want to recognize the driving force behind all student achievement—our teachers!! I extend my sincere gratitude to all the teaching professionals in our district. I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank a teacher for all they do for the young people of our community.

BISD would like to thank the community for their support of our 2019 Bond. The bond will provide us with $1,350,000 of funding to use for improvements throughout the district. With the help of the Board of Trustees, the leadership team, and a bond oversight committee, we will develop a plan to utilize the additional funding for safety and security, technology, and overall improvement of facilities throughout the district.

The Blanco Education Foundation “prize patrol” recently awarded $15,225 for innovative teaching grants to deserving BISD teachers. In addition, the Foundation hosted a banquet to honor the Blanco High School top ten graduates and a teacher that had a significant impact on their education. The banquet celebrated the many accomplishments of these students while also honoring excellence in teaching.

The 2019 Partners group experienced an exciting program this month. The meeting highlighted many of the extra-curricular activities available to our students. The meeting started with the FFA officers showing their parliamentary procedure talents, the pledge led by the elementary Student Council and a kindergarten song. It ended with testimonies from many of our athletes and a demonstration from an FCCLA student. In between were many amazing performances by our talented students.

The Texas House and Senate conference committee came to an agreement on school finance this week. House Bill 3 provides significant increases to the basic allotment per student, adds additional funds for dyslexia and transportation, and adopts high quality K-3 reading standards. In addition, property tax rates will be lowered by an average of 8 cents in 2020 and 13 cents in 2021, and recapture is reduced to school districts by 47% during this biennium. Pay raises for veteran teachers, librarians, nurses, and counselors are also included in the bill. Details about the impact of legislation on BISD have not been finalized at this time. We will remain optimistic.

Congratulations to the Blanco High School, Class of 2019!! The commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 31 at 8:00 pm at Panther Stadium. I wish our graduates much success in their future endeavors. May you find the courage to try, the strength to persevere, and the wings to soar. We send you out into the world with pride and confidence and wish you well as you pursue your dreams!

Please note: from June 3, 2019 – August 2, 2019, Blanco ISD will be operating on summer hours. All campuses and offices will conduct business from 7:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Wednesday, and 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday. Campuses and district offices will be closed on Friday.

Enjoy some fun in the sun, and take time to relax and reflect over the summer months. As always, we will look back on the past with pride and look forward to the future with promise.
